Illuminated Letters
Medieval manuscripts – like the ones that Solon works on in Hollow Earth and Bone Quill – often included illuminated letters, usually the first letter of a section of the manuscript. These letters would be much larger than the rest of the text and embellished with bright colours, patterns, pictures of people and animals, and often gold.
Why not try illuminating your own initial with colourful patterns, birds, beasts and people? You can scan your letter and email it to us (ask for permission from your parent or guardian first) at publicity@mombooks.com and we will display the best on this website.
